What is Pu-erh Tea?
Pu-erh Tea (pronounced POO-air, otherwise known as Puer or Pu’erh) is the most oxidised form of tea which undergoes a special fermentation process which gives it a unique flavour and health benefits. It does not go stale but actually improves with time, like a fine wine. Pu-erh tea come from China’s Yunnan Province. You brew pu-erh tea the same as you would brew black and oolong teas.
Health Benefits of Pu-erh Tea
Pu-erh may be the most potent tea for improving body composition because it assists fat loss in 3 major ways.
Studies show that Pu-erh can literally block your body from producing more fat. Creation of fat by the liver is blunted by drinking this traditional tea.
The caffeine found in Pu-erh triggers your body to increase mobilization of stored fatty acids in fat cells. This let’s your body use this fat more easily as fuel instead of storing it in say, your thighs.
Pu-erh has been clinically proven to enhance HSL (hormone-sensitive lipase), which is a critical enzyme that “unlocks” fat cells so that their contents can be emptied out. HSL’s function is critical to any fat loss processes in the body.
One of the touted benefits of pu-erh tea is its ability to lower cholesterol. A study published in the journal “Experimental Gerontology” in 2009 found that rats given pu-erh tea saw a profound reduction in LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, and an increase in cardioprotective HDL cholesterol, or the “good” cholesterol. Researchers at Beijing University also found that pu-erh tea helps with metabolic syndrome.
Research published in the “Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry” in 2004, showed that pu’erh tea exhibited a similar amount of antioxidant activity as green, black and oolong teas.
Pu-erh tea does contain caffeine but it has lower levels that black tea which makes it a better choice for people who want to avoid caffeine. It can also aid in digestion and is a great after meal tea!
